Head Basketball Coach/Assistant Sports Information Director

Job Summary: Under the general direction of the Director of Athletics, performs a wide range of difficult-to-complex coaching and administrative activities related to the basketball program.  This includes, but is not limited to, creating and maintaining a budget for the basketball program, recruiting student-athletes reaching roster goals, on court coaching basketball during practices and competitions, and doing necessary paperwork to keep compliant with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) rules and regulations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Direct an effective basketball program including frequent and effective communication, creating and maintaining a positive and successful culture, and leading student-athletes academically, athletically, and socially.
  • Develop and maintain the basketball program’s annual budget.
  • Purchase equipment, supplies, and coaching materials to enhance the quality of the basketball program.
  • Organize road trips to away contests including itineraries, transportation, hotel, and meal accommodations.
  • Scheduling of all non-conference games.
  • Oversee student eligibility requirements including class attendance, study hall sessions, and team GPA expectations.
  • Recruit and retain student-athletes, obtaining annual roster expectations, in conjunction with the office of Enrollment Management.
  • Interact with the campus and college community, as well as the community of Nevada, MO.
  • Represent the college at American Midwest Conference (AMC) and National Meetings as appropriate.
  • Provide off-season and in-season strength and conditioning programs
  • Direct the basketball staff in preparation and analyses of opponent teams; analyze game statistics tactical data of opponents and prepare game plans accordingly
  • Assign and supervise the basketball staff in the recruitment of new student athletes and retention of current student athletes
  • Participate in departmental fundraising and community service events, achieving preset goals and standards.
  • Assists with overseeing the athletic department web page and social media platforms, supervises game day game management staff and assists in compiling and distributing contest statistics for all team competitions to meet NAIA and AMC rules and regulations.  Works closely with the Director of Athletics and the Sports Information Director to promote Cottey College Athletics.
  • Responsible for running social media platforms for Cottey College Athletics including but not limited to: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.
  • Assist in the coordination of on-campus athletic events (games, invitationals, tournaments, etc.)
  • Hire, train and schedule game-day staff (announcers, statisticians, scoreboard operators, clock operators, and video staff.)   
  • Work with the Sports Information Director to satisfy team and sports information needs for home and away games.
  • Pursue this job in accordance with the mission and goals of the College, and within the rules and regulations established by the American Midwest Conference (AMC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
  • Other duties as assigned

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

 Ability to be an effective team-oriented leader, capable of motivating athletes and building positive collaboration with faculty, students, and college staff.

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of women’s sports as they apply to a college setting.  This includes: supervision, communications, time management, public relations, program planning and budget development, facility and equipment management, and office procedures and business operating systems.
  • Skills in communicating effectively, verbally and in writing with a diverse range of audiences and settings.  This includes: proper handling of emotional situations, word processing computer skills, financial aptitude, and the ability to work well with internal and external constituents.
  • Work Organization/Time Management – Accomplishes work assignments in an orderly, timely manner; manages time by establishing priorities and developing work plans
  • Civility – Demonstrates respect and dignity for others, generosity of spirit, open-mindedness, and concern for the common good of the College
  • Dependability/Following Direction – Maintains a good attendance record, carries out instructions and fulfills all responsibilities
  • Initiative – Motivates oneself to take appropriate action, and be efficient, resourceful and creative in attaining job objectives
  • Written/Oral Communication – Demonstrates ability for self-expression with clarity, accuracy and attention to detail
  • Professional Style/Presence – Evidence of appropriate professional appearance/style including all aspects of dress and demeanor; demonstrates a clear understanding of a professional collegiate environment
  • Ability to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and lift a minimum of 25 pounds

 CREDENTIALS AND EXPERIENCE:

 Possession of a bachelor’s degree in physical education, sports administration, or related fields from an accredited college or university.  Master’s Preferred.

  • Three years’ professional experience in coaching including working familiarity with the rules and regulations of the NAIA.
  • A commitment to education of women at a single-sex institution and the advancement of women in a collegiate sports program.

 SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  •  Possession of a valid Missouri motor vehicle operator’s license (class E), and willingness to use personal vehicle in the course of employment.
  • Successfully pass a criminal background check.
